Shear bands : Analysis and Computations

shear bands

Shear bands are regions of intensely localized shear deformation that appear during the high strain-rate plastic deformation of metals. Once the band if fully developed, the two sides of the region are displaced relative to each other, (see the picture above), however the material still retains full physical continuity from one side to the other. Shear bands are often precursors to rupture.
